Drywall is the only trade in a house judged entirely by its invisibility. Nobody walks into a finished room and admires the drywall — they just don't see anything wrong. Every decision in the job is aimed at that: making a wall built out of four-by-eight sheets read as one continuous surface.
It starts with layout, before a single sheet goes up. Seams are the weak point, so the goal is fewer of them and none where the light will hunt for them. That means hanging the longest boards the space allows, staggering butt joints so they never stack into a continuous line, and keeping seams away from the wall a window rakes across in the afternoon. A room laid out thoughtfully can have half the joints of one hung sheet-by-sheet from the corner.
Then fastening. Screws need to sit just below the paper surface — deep enough to be covered, shallow enough not to tear through. A screw driven through the paper has lost most of its grip, and a screw left proud telegraphs a dimple through the finish coat forever. Board also has to sit tight to the framing; a sheet bridging a bowed stud will crack along that line within a year or two of the house moving.
Finishing is where patience shows. Tape, then successively wider and thinner coats of compound, each feathered further out than the last, each sanded before the next. The instinct is to fill the joint; the actual job is to spread the transition so wide the eye can't find where it starts. Rushing a coat that hasn't dried traps moisture and shrinks back, and a joint that shrinks always shows up after the paint.
The last step is the one most often skipped: put a work light flat against the wall and look down its length. Raking light exposes every ridge and hollow that flat overhead light hides — and it is exactly what your living-room lamp will do at 7pm. We check every wall that way, with you, before we call it ready for primer. FE Pro Painting hangs and finishes drywall across Rockland County, NY & nearby New Jersey, and because we paint too, the wall is finished by the crew that has to paint it.
