The honest answer is: it depends on what your house is wearing and what the Hudson Valley has thrown at it. Wood siding typically needs repainting every 5–7 years around here; fiber cement goes 10–15; aluminum and stucco land somewhere between. The reason those ranges are shorter than the glossy national averages is the climate — our freeze-thaw cycles work paint loose from the outside in, and humid summers push moisture at it from both sides.
The failure isn't sudden. Paint fades first, then chalks (drag a hand across it — a powdery residue means the binder is breaking down), then cracks and peels. The order matters: fading is cosmetic, chalking is a warning, and cracking is water getting to the wood. Repaint at the chalking stage and you're paying for paint. Repaint after a few winters of open cracks and you're paying for carpentry.
South- and west-facing walls age fastest — they take the sun's UV plus the widest temperature swings. It's common for one side of a Rockland County home to need paint two or three years before the rest. A partial repaint of the weather side is a legitimate strategy, and an honest painter will tell you when that's all you need.
Timing the work matters as much as the interval. Exterior paint wants dry surfaces and steady temperatures — roughly April through October here, with the manufacturers' low-temperature formulas stretching the shoulders. That's why booking an exterior estimate in late winter gets you on the season's schedule ahead of the rush.
And whatever the siding, the wash comes first — dirt, chalk and algae have to come off before anything goes on, which is why power washing is part of the same conversation. If you're not sure which stage your siding is at, don't guess. FE Pro Painting will look it over, tell you honestly whether it needs paint this year or can wait, and put a free written price on it.
